DESCRIPTION:According to data from the South African Statistics Office (Stats SA)\, the number of skilled professionals leaving South Africa has been steadily increasing over the years. In 2019\, a total of 32\,400 people with critical skills\, including engineers\, health professionals\, and businesspeople\, left South Africa. This was a significant increase from the 21\,800 people who left in 2018. \nFurthermore\, a 2021 survey by the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) found that 76% of businesses in South Africa had experienced a loss of critical skills due to emigration. These statistics highlight the severity of the talent exodus problem in South Africa and the need for urgent action to retain and attract skilled professionals. \nDr Shirley Zinn is a best-selling author\, renowned coach\, mentor\, and entrepreneur who has served on the boards of several major companies\, trusts\, charities\, and universities. She was formerly Group Head of Human Resources at Woolworths Holdings Limited\, Head of Human Resources of Standard Bank South Africa\, and Deputy Global Head of Human Resources for the Standard Bank Group. \nDr Zinn attained her doctorate from Harvard Graduate School of Education\, and currently serves on the boards of V&A Waterfront\, Sanlam\, Spar SA\, MTN\, Spur Corporation\, WWF\, The Boston Consulting Group\, and Nedbank’s Eyethu Community Trust\, amongst others. In particular\, the skills deficit constraining the Energy and Resources sector requires urgent intervention. As we seek more sustainable alternatives to our country’s current energy crisis\, we need a new approach to our talent development strategies. \nWith the introduction of a Dual Higher Education (DHE) model in the South African education system\, this can be achieved with great success where industry partners collaborate with universities in developing future employees. SUMMARY:South Africa's Energy Crisis: What is the Outlook for SA's Energy Supply?
DESCRIPTION:The Eskom crisis has emerged as the fulcrum on which the fortunes of the South African economy will pivot. Whilst we were given hope of a decisive course of action during his previous SONA address\, when President Ramaphosa indicated that Eskom would be unbundled into three distinct entities\, this stance seemed to soften considerably during his most recent SONA address. The announcement that government’s financial support of this failed SOE would be intensified in the short-term was somewhat concerning as throwing more money at Eskom just to keep it alive will not solve the problem and only serves to kick the can down the road. \nIn addition\, renewable energy technologies have evolved exponentially\, to the point where solar and wind power is now cheaper to produce than coal-powered energy. South Africa’s REIPP program has been plagued by uncertainty and despite the recent designation of a renewables SEZ in Atlantis\, these technologies don’t seem to feature prominently in discussion around Eskom. The long-term business case for solar and wind energy is undeniable\, so why do we seem to be shying away from an obvious solution? \nWith so much uncertainty and noise in the public domain around what is likely to happen at Eskom\, it would be immensely beneficial for business leaders to be afforded a deeper understanding of critical factors affecting energy security. \nJoin us as we receive an update on the outlook for South Africa’s energy supply from Prof Anton Eberhard\, who chairs the Eskom Sustainability Task Team. \nPlease note this event is open to Accelerate Cape Town members only.

SUMMARY:The Plight of Black Professionals in Cape Town
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, an opinion piece written by a discontented investment professional made waves in local media highlighting a key pressure point for business – the plight of black professionals in Cape Town. The widely-shared article was both disheartening and encouraging to see. It was encouraging because it has brought a critically important issue into the public domain in a manner that demands attention and deep\, honest engagement around a subject that is often uncomfortable to acknowledge. It was disheartening because it is a long-standing issue in corporate Cape Town\, which has not been actively addressed and which ultimately results in a sense of alienation for young black talent who feel unwelcome in the Mother City. \nThis is\, however\, a complex and multi-faceted challenge\, informed more by anecdotal rather than empirical evidence. The evidence\, nevertheless\, is there and can no longer be ignored. Cape Town is experiencing an exodus of black talent and it costs regional corporates a fortune to continually import black talent and offer above-market salaries in the hope of driving greater retention\, only to have them relocate north after a year or two. This issue is not new to Accelerate Cape Town as we have traditionally supported our members’ Human Capital programmes through initiatives such as our Inspiration Sessions\, Young Leaders Dinners and HR Professional Forums. \nThe objectives of this Thought Leaders engagement are to: \n\nContinue the conversation around the plight of black professionals in Cape Town in an honest and robust manner\nDiscuss ways to deal decisively with both perceived and actual racism\nConsider programmes within the workplace that drive higher levels of cultural intelligence across all levels of the organisation\nTake a closer look at recruitment practice and the unconscious cultural bias often evident in the behaviours of recruiters.\n\nSpeaker profiles: \nNene Molefi \nOwner and MD of Mandate Molefi\, Nene is an experienced consultant and facilitator with a track record that spans more than 18 years. Nene’s work involves facilitation in culture change\, transformation and leadership development interventions for large and medium-sized companies. She has conducted dialogue sessions on Social Context and Social Cohesion for all the High Courts and Constitutional Court Judges and is currently working with a number of Private Schools on Unconscious Bias and Diversity\, as well as Inclusion Strategies. Nene has been a member of the Diversity Collegium\, a think tank of diversity experts across the globe\, where she served as an expert panelist responsible for developing the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmark Tool. She is a board member and secretary of The Center for Global Inclusion – an organisation founded in the USA with members across the globe. Nene sits on the Advisory structure of the Auditor General of SA and is an esteemed author of a book called A Journey of Diversity and Inclusion in South Africa (Guidelines for Leading Inclusively)\, published in 2017. \nAyanda Mfusi  \nAyanda Mfusi is a seasoned and experienced Corporate and Investment Banker with over 4 years in the industry. She’s currently a Relationship Manager at Absa’s Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) division where she’s responsible for the overall management of large-scale accounts with the combine value of over R 3 Billions. Ayanda currently serves as the Black Management Forum (Western Cape) Deputy Chairperson and as an alternate Director of the Black Management Forum Board of Directors. Prior to her election she was the inaugural Chairperson of the Century City Branch. She’s also the ABSA Corporate Investment Banking Western Cape CSI Chairperson Committee looking at various social impact project initiated by the bank. Ayanda is also a member of the fundraising committee of the NPO\, Fun Learning for Youth (FLY). DESCRIPTION:Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) has been identified by a number of ACT members as a key pressure point and concern going forward. Successful ESD initiatives have the potential to substantially drive real and lasting change in South Africa\, but we need to start respecting the intention of the legislation\, develop platforms for collaborative ESD initiatives\, and move away from the notion that ESD is merely a compliance exercise. \nHaving developed a unique ESD programme methodology over the past 18 months\, Accelerate Cape Town would like to invite you to join us at our ESD workshop where we will: \n\nProvide a progress update on the current status of the ACT ESD initiative\nIntroduce the various partners that will work with ACT to drive successful implementation\nProvide a deeper level of understanding on how the project will be operationalised\nExplore the opportunities for ACT corporate members to improve their B-BBEE Scorecards through the ACT ESD initiative and provide an impactful outlet for available ESD funds.\n\nSpeakers  \nBongiwe Mbunge\, Partner\, Mazars \nBongiwe joined Mazars in February 2003. She qualified as a Chartered Accountant and was promoted through the ranks to manager and later senior manager. She has over ten years’ experience within a broad range of industries and has managed various clients from owner managed businesses to large listed entities. She was promoted to partner at the Cape Town practice in March 2018. \nSifiso Ndwandwe\, Executive Director\, Catalyst for Growth \nSifiso is the Executive Director at Catalyst for Growth (C4G)\, an initiative co-funded by JP Morgan and USAID and whose mandate is monitoring and evaluation of the Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) sector to enhance its impact in the economy. He has spent over 25 years in the enterprise development sector in the SADC including South Africa. He has held various senior roles in NEPA (now Seda)\, Mondi Limited\, and recently served as CEO of the Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA) for 10 years. Outside South Africa he has worked for CARE International. He serves on various Boards in the corporate and development sectors. He has studied at various institutions including the University of Swaziland\, GSB (UCT)\, Wits Business School\, University of Singapore\, and Cranefield University (UK). \nMalcolm Farrell\, Director\, SCNET \nMalcolm has a long career in the Procurement discipline\, having worked through various buying roles in Anglo American\, including business lead to develop the eProcurement strategy at Anglo and Head of procurement at AngloGold\, and is currently Group Procurement Director at Group Five and also a director of Supply Chain Network (SCNET). SUMMARY:Avoiding "Day Zero" in 2018 & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Facing its worst drought in a century\, Cape Town is in the midst of a severe water crisis. Business and Government are now required to collaborate on short-term plans to avoid a “Day Zero” scenario\, develop contingency plans in the event that “Day Zero” is reached\, and work on longer-term augmentation plans to diversify the city’s water sources. \nPlanning for business continuity is increasingly necessary but challenging given the conflicting messages in the public domain. Over the next few weeks\, Accelerate Cape Town together with partners such as Wesgro\, will be hosting a series of engagements to address the topic of business continuity and sustainability within a water scarce city. The series aims to provide stakeholders with practical and implementable water saving solutions\, facilitate information flow between government and business\, and help design public-private solutions to diversifying Cape Town’s water sources. \nThe first in the series\, “Avoiding Day Zero in 2018 and beyond” will provide business with a status update\, as well as insight on how we can work together to avoid “Day Zero”\, develop contingency plans\, and partner on long-term solutions. \nJoin us as we hear updates from Minister of Economic Opportunities\, Alan Winde and Deputy Mayor\, Ian Neilson. We will also facilitate an interactive panel discussion with relevant experts working at the heart of the crisis. SUMMARY:SA’s influence on Africa's Growth Trajectory – A Discussion with Maria Ramos
DESCRIPTION:South Africa has long held the promise of being the driving force behind Africa’s economic resurgence. However\, geopolitical shifts and the impact this has on the global economy\, as well as South Africa’s economic strain resulting from political instability and an imminent ratings downgrade\, have called into question not only global sentiment about Africa’s growth trajectory\, but also the potential for South Africa to be the gateway to the continent. \nEarlier this year\, Barclays announced its exit from the African continent to focus more on its USA and UK markets. This represents one of the biggest disinvestments from SA since the 1980’s. Maria Ramos\, CEO of Barclays Africa Group\, described the move as a defining moment for Barclays Africa\, and a significant opportunity to determine our own destiny. Nevertheless\, with SA banks being downgraded to non-investment grade to fall in line with our country rating\, the potential negative impact on the financial services sector\, as well as the broader regional economy\, remains very high. \nJoin us as we hear from Maria Ramos who\, in addition to her role at Barclays Africa\, has extensive experience working within government at both National Treasury and Transnet. With this insight and her experience on the Executive Committee of the WEF’s International Business Council\, Maria is well placed to share her thoughts on navigating the uncertainties created by our current political and economic climate. \nAbout Maria Ramos \nMaria is the CEO of Barclays Africa Group Limited. Prior to joining ABSA as Group Chief Executive in March 2009\, she was the Group Chief Executive of Transnet and Director-General of the National Treasury for seven years. She has in the past served as a non-executive and independent director on the boards of Sanlam Ltd\, Remgro Ltd and SABMiller PLC\, and currently serves on the Board of Richmont SA. She is the current Chairman of the Banking Association of South Africa\, and a member of the Executive Committee of the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council. She has successively been ranked in Fortune magazine’s annual survey of the 50 most powerful women in business for a number of years\, having most recently been ranked 11th in the EMEA Region for 2015. Her contribution has been recognized through numerous awards\, including being named CNBC Africa Woman Leader of the Year (2011)\, and was awarded the Wits Business School’s Management Excellence Award (2010).

SUMMARY:Building Bridges Between SMEs and Corporates Through ESD
DESCRIPTION:SA desperately needs jobs and economic development but with government coming under increasing pressure to reduce its wage bill\, and the corporate sector similarly pushing for greater efficiency in a recessionary economy\, the only remaining hope for job growth is the SME sector. In order to significantly grow SMEs\, we need to provide them with access to market opportunities\, finance\, technical support\, and mentorship. \nSince the revised B-BBEE codes came into effect\, many corporates have ventured down the path toward becoming ESD champions. However\, apart from a handful of notable success stories\, this has largely proven to be a frustrating exercise with limited impact on emerging black-owned SMEs. Successful ESD has the potential to substantially drive real and lasting change in South Africa but we need to start respecting the intention of the legislation\, develop platforms for collaborative ESD initiatives\, and move away from the notion that ESD is merely a compliance exercise. \nJoin us as we hear from Adam Ismail\, Partner in Corporate Practice at Webber Wentzel\, who will sketch the background as to why ESD has become so important for corporates in relation to the B-BBEE codes. Tanner Methvin\, Partner at Impact Amplifier\, will take us through the findings of the report that they partnered with New York University (NYU) on\, around the impact of Enterprise Development in SA. Pavlo Phitidis\, CEO at Aurik Business Accelerator\, will share some of their initiatives that have had a massive impact. Emerging technologies such as IoT\, AI\, machine learning\, advanced robotics and 3D printing are being adopted in the workplace and through machine utilisation/application\, are creating data-driven efficiencies and transforming businesses across the globe. \nHowever\, it is important to note that these contributing digital technologies are replacing a host of functions currently performed by humans.
