Partnering with AfricaCom: sessions on Big Data and Smart Cities

Accelerate Cape Town is partnering with AfricaCom, the largest Africa-focused tech event globally at the CTICC from 14 – 18 November 2016. The programme consists of 20 tracks and features, and Accelerate Cape Town has partnered on two of the new streams: Internet of Things & Smart Cities Africa, and Big Data.
Join us on the afternoon of 16 November to hear from Pieter Vorster, Chief Analytics Officer: Big Data and Analytics at Barclays Africa on Data Analytics and Actionable Insights focusing on how real-time CRM is the best actionable insights you can have.
This will be followed on by a focused session on Roadmap to Smart Cape Town: how to realise the model that will see civic assets, buildings, environment and citizens exchange data for the benefit of all. At this session we will hear from:
- Rudy Abrahams, SAP-ERP Support Centre Manager at the City of Cape Town on their Smart City initiatives and Digital City Strategy with an overview of projects and gaps that exist
- Simon Carpenter, Chief Technology Officer at SAP on SAP’s projects with the City of Cape Town, and global Future Cities initiatives particularly in developing countries
- Wolf Stinnes, Chief Solutions Architect responsible for Smart Cities and Internet of Things at Dimension Data MEA, will highlight how the Internet of Things and technology is enabling Smart City initiatives and digital city strategies, and how this supports the City of Cape Town’s strategic pillars.
Pieter Vorster was appointed as the Chief Analytics Officer for Corporate and Investment Banking at Barclays Africa in 2015. The core focus of his role is to deliver data as a strategic asset through big data technology and data science practices. Prior to this, Pieter was appointed as Head of Client Value Management for CIB in 2012. In this role he was responsible for Client Insight, Client Solutions and Client Service (including Africa). Before he joined CIB in 2012, Pieter held the position of Chief of Staff in the Office of the CEO and Deputy CEO at Absa Group, and GM Absa Home Loans and Pension Backed Lending. Prior to joining Absa in 2007, Pieter worked at Liberty Life as Director Strategic Partners and Director Bancassurance amongst other positions.
Rudy Abrahams has been serving the Citizens of Cape Town in heading up the City of Cape Town’s SAP-ERP Support Centre, the largest SAP implementation in local government in the world, since 2010. Rudy been involved in the ICT sector for more than 20 years. Joining Local Government with his vast ICT experience, Rudy has demonstrated the value of IT-led business transformation and instilled the importance of customer centricity, enabling the City of Cape Town to bridge the digital divide. His passion for people and technology, combined with hands-on operations leadership style allows him to successfully support and promote the City’s digital strategy, whilst working within the boundaries of government administration
Simon Carpenter is the Chief Technology Advisor for SAP Africa. He has spent the last 21 years with market-leader SAP’s African business where he has held a number of leadership positions. Simon has worked predominantly in the area of operations and logistics solutions ranging from on-board computing in transport; to large-scale enterprise systems. He has broad experience having worked in sales, marketing, support management, project management, and consulting and systems development. He thus has good insight into the soft issues (such as change management) that must be addressed for any technological initiative to be successful.
