Sustainability Forum: Rapid Urbanisation

July 24, 2015 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am

With the continuous population growth and greater economic opportunities in our cities, rapid urbanisation is a reality. Urban populations are expected to grow from 33% in 1950 to 60% and 80% in developed countries by 2025. These unprecedented rates of urbanisation put enormous pressure on cities and environmental sustainability and addressing issues such as density levels, land use patterns and connectivity will have a major impact on the climate and economic prosperity.

From a population of 3.75 million, Cape Town will expand to 5 million by 2030 due to natural growth and migration. As a city built within the apartheid era, what opportunities are there for densification, affordable housing and urban development that will ensure a more inclusive city? How we respond to rapid urbanisation, energy security, infrastructure development, resource scarcity, water constraints, and climate change will determine our prosperity.

Join us as we hear from Prof Edgar Pieterse, Director at the African Centre for Cities who will discuss the environmental and social impacts of rapid urbanisation and Cathy Stone, Director: Spatial Planning & Urban Design at the City of Cape Town who will focus on land use planning, densification and development opportunities within Cape Town.
