Business and Government Data Exchange Workshop

Government departments accumulate a multitude of data which could be valuable to and create efficiency for business if it was made available. Various government departments at local, regional and national level are creating programmes to open up their data to the public, but with the issues of how to exchange this information to create value and at the same time, protect personal information. This workshop will provide a discussion between business and representatives from the City of Cape Town, WC Government and national data projects to unpack  what data is currently available, what projects are in the pipeline and what data business would find valuable.

The objective of the workshop is to determine how business and government can collectively unlock the value of data. It is to provide an open discussion on what government data is available and for more effective data sharing between business and government. The workshop will:

• Determine what government data sets are currently available and what data government could make available for business to enhance business processes and contribute to the ease of doing business
• Determine how data is currently shared and what technology is available for effective sharing
• Understanding South Africa’s legislation relating to data privacy, POPI and the exchange of data
• Foster collaboration between business and government and determine the next steps following the workshop to enhance this collaboration.

About the Speakers

• Etienne Ward, Director and Ryan Schefermann, Associate Director at Deloitte Risk Advisory. Their focus areas include Data Analytics, Cyber Risk Services and Technology Assurance & Advisory.
• Magnus Rademeyer, MD of AfriGIS. Magnus is a founding member of AfriGIS, a technology innovation company that focusses on bringing information about location to life though data visualisation.
• Keith Smith, Director: Information and Knowledge Management and Neil Hoorn, Project Manager of the Open Data Portal at the City of Cape Town. The City of Cape Town launched their Open Data Portal in 2015 and currently has 85 data sets available with additional datasets available upon request.
• Zeenat Ishmail, Chief Director: Strategic Management Information and Jacques du Preez, Directorate: Spatial Information in the Department of the Premier. Zeenat is responsible for WC Government’s Data Governance project and Jacques is involved in Spatial Information within the Province.
• Alexia Christie, Partner in Technology, Media, Telecommunications & IP at Webber Wentzel. Alexia has many years of experience in technology law and data privacy law. She has very practical in-house counsel insights from her previous roles as Head of Legal for MIH Internet Africa (MEA), and Naspers Group Internet Counsel.
• Shirley Robinson, consultant at Economic Rise Consulting. Shirley is working with Treasury and SARS on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business and Urbanisation Review, and National Treasury’s Cities Support Programme.
