Against the background of ongoing socio-political unrest in South Africa, the issue of land expropriation without compensation has not only sparked vehement debate but has also brought added uncertainty to an already ailing economic climate.

Land dispossession has been described by President Cyril Ramaphosa as South Africa’s “original sin”, and there remains a depth of emotion surrounding the topic of land in South Africa. Land ownership is believed by many to be a crucial part of the future social and economic success of our country, but how will land expropriation take place, what are the legalities surrounding it and what land will specifically be targeted?
